The Play

Othello is a highly esteemed General in the service of Venice, who eventually marries Desdemona. Iago is Othello’s ambitious friend. Othello promotes Michael Cassio as a lieutenant and Iago is extremely jealous. Iago begins an evil and malicious campaign against the hero. Othello elopes with Desdemona but Iago starts to plot against them. Othello becomes jealous and suspicious of Desdemona, owing to her closeness with Cassio. He confides in Iago that he plans to poison Desdemona. Plots and murders ensue and Othello smothers his innocent wife to death. Emilia reveals the truth about the scheming Iago. Overcome with guilt, Othello wounds Iago, later killing himself.

Guru Sadanam P V Balakrishnan, the former Principal of the CK, New Delhi since 1980 to 2008, is an accomplished performer, he has impersonated probably all the important Kathakali characters and his performances have been acclaimed both by the media and the audience. As a renowned teacher of Kathakali, his services have been sought by institutions such as NSD, CCRT, ICCR, Delhi University, ARTA (Paris), SPICMACAY etc. He has directed, choreographed and produced more than 30 new Kathakali plays. He has also written Attakathas (Literature) and composed music. He is the recipient of many awards including the SNA Award, 2003 and Parishad Samman from SKP,
